It was Saturday morning when Debbie asked me Miles' preference for cookies. At a loss, I responded with some of the cookies I've observed Miles eat. "Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chip, Sugar, Oatmeal, Subway's White Chocolate Macadamia Nut..." She cut me off with a wave of her hand and a brisk nod. In a few hours' time, the batches of walnut-chocolate chip and peanut butter resided in the chilled confines of the refrigerator while visions of oven-time danced in their heads.
The kitchen is Debbie's domain. She is all powerful there, and I've long assigned her the moniker of
Goodies Goddess. All seem small and insignificant as she weaves her magic in that holy place. It was there that she looked down upon my inappreciable form, wooden spoon perched in ceremony, and thundered, "Thou shalt lead these cookies oven-ward." I had a week during which to carry out the task.
The Monday-following, I set to do my given work—at great personal cost, for I was unable to find a cookie scoop residing in Debbie's kitchen. I felt terribly degraded as my hands felt the sugary grit beneath them, but I forged on. I did their maker proud.
Now, a week later, the cookies survive—but only
just. We have a swell of cookie monsters in residence and in frequent visitors alike. Contrary to what Miles would have you believe,
I am not one of them. Rumor has it that the cookies were
meant to survive the weekly onslaught of cookie consumption
and provide sole nourishment for the upcoming vacation in Northern Wisconsin. Silly Aunt Debbie, goddess or not. Silly, silly, silly.
This week, I have been given the charge to bring into existence a cookie colony befitting a vacationing family in The North Woods. No small feat...I'm not
bad at cookie-making, but I'm no Debbie. I uh...oh, I blush to admit it...
use recipes. I asked Mom last night if she had a preference for cookies that I ought to make. She replied, "Oh, I really shouldn't be eating cookies...but if you're looking for suggestions sour cream cookies with cream cheese frosting always go down well..."
